Macbeth The Feature Film – From Page to Silver Screen

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Born in 1564 in Warwickshire, England, William Shakespeare was a playwright, actor and poet. Known for his many plays including Macbeth (1606), Hamlet (1603) and Romeo and Juliet (1597), to name a few, and his many known quotes, including, “All that glitters is not gold” and “to be, or not to be, that is the question.” For his many plays, Shakespeare is known to be the greatest writer in the English language. “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare is a tragedy first staged in 1606. Macbeth remains as one of Shakespeare’s most recognised plays and is used now days as a classroom case study, and as a performance play. The play consists of various characters, most notably, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, the Three Witches, Banquo and Macduff.

The play starts by the Three Witches telling Macbeth he will be named thane of Cawdor, that he will eventually be the Kind of Scotland, while is companion Banquo will create a line of Kings, although not being a King himself. Shortly after being this encounter with the witches, Macbeth is in fact named thane of Cawdor, and plans to dine with the King. Macbeth writes to his wife, Lady Macbeth, about this all, who wants this for him, and she does not hesitate to tell Macbeth to murder the King to obtain his title, which Macbeth does. This ultimately puts Macbeth in a lot of danger causing him to murder many others to protect himself

From this moment, the play takes many twists and turns, and there is no going back for Macbeth. This leaves many wondering, is Macbeth evil? Or is Lady Macbeth to blame? Macbeth is somewhat rooted and based on true historic events, for example, Macbeth was the King of Scotland in 1040. Since the first performance of the play, Macbeth has been re created in many forms, from silent films to animated films. Most notably, the Roman Polanski’s 1971 Macbeth Movie, Trevor Nunn’s 1978 Macbeth Movie, Justin Kurzel’s 2015 Macbeth Movie, and Geoffrey Wright’s 2006 Macbeth Movie are all popular takes of Macbeth, from the play to the big screen.

Geoffrey Wrights 2006 take on Macbeth stars English born Australian actor Sam Worthington, who is popular for his role in Avatar, and Clash of the Titans. Filmed in Australia, this version of the film added a modern day spin on the play. This version of the play is set in a modern-day gangster setting. Here, Macbeth intentionally goes to a drug deal where there is a gunfight between the gangs. From here, Macbeth and Banquo kill the owner and seize their club. Macbeth is told by the three witches that he will have control over the gang. Macbeth tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, about this all, who wants this for him, and she does not hesitate to tell Macbeth to murder the King to obtain this gang leader title. As the original play does, this ultimately puts Macbeth in a lot of danger causing him to murder many others to protect himself.
